ONE ROOM. 13 Gramercy Park South, 4
Gramercy Park is a much ballyhooed neighborhood in New York City when in reality, it’s a park first and a neighborhood second. The park, which is private to those residents that actually reside in buildings that encircle this one square block, is off limits to all other Gramercy Park residents and visitors.
Our One Room selection for today is a room that literally sits right on the park. Lounge on your window settee and gaze across one of the city’s true wonders. Or step back and marvel at the stunning wall of French casement windows that frame the greenery beyond. Thick mullions add depth and infinite character to the window scheme.
13 Gramercy Park South sits on the southside of the park, amidst a historic stretch of townhomes and low-rise buildings, including the adjoining National Arts Club. The 26-foot wide mansion dates back to 1847 and is one of 39 buildings that surround the gated park. The elevatored townhouse rises five floors and contains just seven cooperative apartments. The building distinguishes itself from its neighbors by its vertical fenestration of casement windows.
Apartment 4 is a full-floor residence that has recently undergone a sterling renovation; eloquently featured in Architectural Digest in November 2018. According to the architect, Neal Becksteadt, the apartment blends the elegance of French design with the cool feel of downtown New York. The living room, with its eye on the park, is the centerpiece of this design dynamic.
The living room radiates a refined style and sophistication. Ten-foot tall ceilings add volume and large openings to the adjoining library and dining room create an air of openness. The room features a gas fireplace with a sculptured marble surround and hardwood floors with an inlaid border. Sublime moldings adorn the walls from their base to their crown.
This devine Gramercy Park home spans seven rooms while offering three full bedrooms (currently configured as two bedrooms and a library). When one gets tired of contemplating the park, they can retreat to the rear of the apartment and relax in either the solarium or on the grand terrace. Lest we forget that the residence comes with a coveted key to the park as well.
