The Great Outdoors in Tribeca – 153 Chambers Street, PH

The great outdoors takes on new meaning with this gorgeous triplex penthouse loft. Multiple outdoor spaces, including a landscaped roof deck offers serenity and shields one from the rush of city life below.

Located in the heart of TriBeCa, 153 Chambers Street is rather nondescript, one of many small buildings in the neighborhood that have been transformed from commercial to residential use.  But concealed from sight is this hidden gem, beautifully designed with architectural precision. At approximately 3772 total square feet (2500 interior and 1272 exterior), this fusion of indoor and outdoor space offers a dynamic home whether you’re hanging out with family or entertaining en masse.

As a bit of a twist, we’re going to start this new post in our “Apartments We Love” series from the roof deck as we absorb the magical south-facing views of the Freedom Tower.  Lower yourself to the second level of this penthouse and the open kitchen/dining area is flanked by a north and south terrace.

Wide floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto the north-facing terrace, creating a oneness between the interior and exterior spaces.  A tall fence defines the perimeter and creates a level of privacy.

The south facing terrace offers a raised deck with hot tub and a hidden shower; true opulence under the lights of Manhattan. Lush plantings provide greenery and some privacy – well you are on a rooftop.

As one would expect, there is a keyed elevator that delivers you to this special residence.   What you might not expect is that the design of the home splits the living room from the dining and kitchen areas.  A bit atypical but this doesn’t douse our enthusiasm for this unique space.

The main level of this multi-floor home offers a center living room off the foyer and split bedrooms at the front and rear of the loft.  The living room is a sensible space with clean lines, tall ceilings and an expansive gallery wall for an art collection.   Exposed brick walls, custom lighting and a large wood-burning fireplace with a limestone surround makes this home all the more special. Nearby, a sky-lit study awaits; it’s cozy and a perfect place to relax and read a book.

The sprawling master bedroom suite, located at the rear of the floor, has a bounty of natural light from four oversized picture windows. The suite features a large sitting area, a dressing room with custom closets and an en suite bath.  The bath is complete with high-end fixtures,  a custom marble vanity, a steam shower and a separate water closet.  Frosted glass provides privacy.

At the front of the loft, there is a sun-drenched guest bedroom.  It has a custom built-in bureau, fitted closets and a separate dressing area. The en-suite bathroom is heavenly with glass tiled walls, double vanity, a soaking tub and an overhead rain shower. Your guests may decide to stay longer than planned.

While the first floor of this penthouse grabs your attention, it is the second floor that truly raises the bar.   But first, take in the thrill of climbing up the one-of-a-kind sculptural staircase. In contrast to the calm of the main floor the second level is full of moxie, primed as the home’s gathering point.

If one were to define “open kitchen,” this just might be the model.  The kitchen not only opens to the adjoining dining area, but opens to the sky and to two private terraces situated on either end of the loft.   One would be hard pressed to find a better indoor/outdoor dining experience. Twenty-foot ceilings create drama; double-height windows stream in rays of natural light and evening glamour.  Functionality is provided by the oversized kitchen island (comfortably seats four), floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry, stone flooring (so easy to clean) and an extensive package of top-of-the-line appliances.   There is even a built in office area.  Behind the dining area, like a piece of structural art, the stairs continue their ascent.  A brick wall provides a backdrop.

And of course there is more.  Additional features include:  Multi-zoned heating and cooling, radiant heated flooring, custom lighting on dimmers, electronic shades, a washer-dryer and plentiful storage space.  The building provides a video intercom system and private basement storage.
The current asking price for the three-bedroom penthouse at 153 Chambers Street is $5.25 million.  The listing is being represented by Richard Orenstein of Brown Harris Stevens. For further information or just a voyeuristic peek at this special home, please check out Linecity.com
